About

Christ Church, together with the adjacent New Schoolrooms (see here), is the main church in Radyr offering a wide range of regular services and supporting local organisations. We are always friendly and welcoming. Our main Sunday Eucharist is accompanied by a Sunday Club for children and refreshments are served after the service.  The church is blessed with a fine organ, plus grand piano, and there is an active choir. We also have a Lady Chapel which is used for smaller services. Some services are live streamed – see below. We would love you to join us in worship, or just pop in – the church is open during the day Monday through Sunday for prayer or quiet time.

Live Streaming of Worship at Christ Church

Christ Church has a camera system installed which means it is possible for us to live-stream to our YouTube Channel and record services. Camera angles have been chosen specifically to safeguard your privacy but your image may be captured at various times. If this is a problem, please speak to the stewards on arrival who can then place you in a suitable position in the church.

History

The origin of Christ Church really centres on the old Parish Church (St John’s in Danescourt) nearly 800 years ago. (The name ‘Radyr’ actually stems from the Latin word ‘oratorium’ a house of prayer.) As Radyr, as we now know it, grew as a result of the coming of the railways there was need to establish a church for the increasing population. The then Rector petitioned the Earl of Plymouth for land and succeeded in building a Rectory (1887) and raising money for the building of Christ Church. The nave was opened for worship on Easter Day 1904. The tower was added in 1910, complete with a fine set of bells donated by a local dignitary, Col. Henry Oakden Fisher. Grade 2 listed, the church was designed by the then Diocesan architect, George Halliday, who also designed much of the interior, including the pews, choir pews, screen, font and pulpit. There is also a fine set of stained-glass windows, donated by a number of benefactors. The result is a much loved harmonious entity, kept in good order.
