Save Our Roof – St Catwg’s Church, Pentyrch

St Catwg’s Church was built in 1857 and was designated as a Grade II Listed Building on 31 Jan 2000. We have over the years maintained the Church well, but in 2024, we had a Quinquennial Inspection (QI) by an Architect who found issues with the fabric of the church that urgently needed attention. One of the most important issues was that the roof needed urgent repair: firstly to stop the damp coming from the bell tower on the west wall; secondly to repair and replace purple and blue Welsh roof slates on the main building; thirdly to improve the roof ventilation in the Church Room; and repair the rainwater goods which are inadequate for the size of the roof – this is merely a snapshot of the work needed. The QI found other issues (which to correct would be in excess of £45K) which include windows, doors, flooring etc.

We have so many events and concerts in addition to our services at the Church, so thought it pragmatic to firstly concentrate on the roof, ensuring the Church is warm and dry for all of its users. The cost of the work needed on the roof amounts to £21,000. An application has been made to the Church in Wales for a £7,500 grant but we do not know at this point if we will be successful or how much we will receive. We plan to hold a concert in October hosted by St Catwg’s, to raise funds for the “Help Repair the Roof” Project and also hold other fun events, so check out our website from time to time for details.

We are reaching out to our community to ask if anyone can give a little to support us in this work.  Any amount you can give would be gratefully appreciated no matter how small.
